Crowns & Bridges
Restore And Strengthen Your Damaged Tooth

Avoid losing a tooth altogether with a dental crown. When a tooth is heavily decayed it is more likely to fracture and lose considerable tooth structure. A crown is a restoration that covers or “caps” a tooth to restore it to its normal shape and strength. Crowns may be made from several different materials, gold and porcelain being the most common types.

Impact & Benefits

When a tooth is heavily decayed it is more likely to fracture and lose considerable tooth structure. A crown is a restoration that covers or “caps” a tooth to restore it to its normal shape and strength.

It is also important to replace your lost teeth quickly to prevent drifting or tipping of the neighbouring teeth, which can lead to bite problems. A bridge is one option to replace one or more missing teeth.

Procedure

Crowns

Crowns may be made from several different materials, gold and porcelain being the most common types.

Gold is usually used on the back teeth for its strength and because less tooth structure needs to be drilled away before taking the impression and fitting the crown. Gold also shrinks less when cast by the lab technician and is easier to polish.

Porcelain is primarily used for the front teeth because it looks more natural and beautiful. It can also be used for the back teeth by adding metal on the inside for strength and support.

Bridges

Bridges are fixed into place by healthy teeth on each side of the space vacated by the missing teeth. With proper brushing, flossing and regular checkups the bridge life will average about 10 years. With excellent care and a lack of bad habits like biting hard objects, grinding your teeth, or smoking, the life of the bridge will increase.
