Canadian Dental Care Plan
Making Dental Services Accessible
The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a new federal initiative designed to make dental care more accessible and affordable for eligible Canadian residents. As of 2025, the CDCP aims to cover a significant portion of basic dental services for children, seniors, and lower-income families who do not have private dental insurance.

What Does the CDCP Cover?
The CDCP covers a range of dental services, such as:
- Exams and assessments
- X-rays
- Cleanings
- Fillings
- Root canals
- Extractions
- Select prosthodontic services (like dentures)
However, not every procedure is covered in full. The amount covered depends on your income level and the procedure required. In most cases, you may still be responsible for a co-payment or portion of your dental bill.
CDCP in Ontario: What You Need to Know
If you live in Ontario, the CDCP is available alongside existing provincial dental programs such as:
- Healthy Smiles Ontario (for children and youth up to 17 years from low-income households)
- Ontario Seniors Dental Care Program (for low-income seniors)
It’s important to check your eligibility for these programs, as you may be able to combine provincial and federal support to maximize your coverage.
Covering the Remaining Balance: Your Options Beyond CDCP
The CDCP helps, but it may not cover 100% of your dental expenses. At Lakeview Dentistry, we want to ensure that every patient receives the care they need without financial stress. If you have costs not covered by CDCP, here are some ways to manage them:
- Health Spending Accounts (HSA):
- Some patients have access to HSAs through their employer or as self-employed individuals, which can be used to pay for dental expenses not covered by government plans.
- Flexible Payment Plans:
- Ask us about interest-free or low-interest payment options. We work with patients to spread out payments over time if needed.
- Ontario Programs:
- Eligible patients can access provincial dental programs as mentioned above.
- Tax Credits:
- Some dental expenses not covered by insurance or the CDCP can be claimed as medical expenses on your income tax return.
