Extractions/Wisdom Teeth Removal
Tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the bone for positional, structural, or economic reasons.
Teeth are often removed because they are impacted. Teeth become impacted when they are prevented from growing into their normal position in the mouth by gum tissue, bone, or other teeth. Impaction is a common reason for the extraction of wisdom teeth.
Teeth may also be extracted to make room in the mouth prior to straightening the remaining teeth through orthodontic treatment or so that you can have dental implants when a tooth is so badly decayed or broken that it cannot be restored.
At Lakeview Dentistry, we can perform teeth extractions under local anaesthesia in the comfort and convenience of our office. Oral sedation is also available for apprehensive or nervous patients.
Wisdom teeth Extractions
Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt within the mouth. When they align properly, and gum tissue is healthy, wisdom teeth do not have to be removed.
When they are prevented from properly erupting within the mouth, grow sideways, partially emerge from the gum, or remain trapped beneath the gum and bone it is common practice to have them removed as early as possible.
Early removal is recommended to prevent impacted teeth from causing further problems. When they are partially erupted, the opening around the tooth allows bacteria to grow and will eventually cause an infection, stiffness and pain. The pressure from the erupting wisdom tooth may move other teeth and disrupt the orthodontic or natural alignment of teeth. The most serious problem occurs when tumours or cysts form around the impacted wisdom tooth, resulting in the destruction of the jawbone and healthy teeth. Removal of the offending impacted tooth or teeth usually resolves these problems.
